CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a computerised language, which controls the formatting of web pages. This software is used for controlling the appearance of web pages based on a set of pre-established rules. Most designers work with CSS in conjunction with Java Script or Perl. Many designers use a combination of these technologies for developing a website.
The art of web designing continues to evolve. Web page designs are becoming more stylized, with increased sophistication in graphic design, typography and backgrounds. As the world becomes more technologically orientated, the design methods used are evolving with it. In the past, web designers would learn HTML, and from there to master some specialised software, before being able to develop web pages. Nowadays, it takes longer to learn to develop web pages than it did before.
A web designer works with the client to create a functional layout, using many different elements that are often hidden within the page. To create the layout, web designers begin by creating a basic design, called the “design concept”. Each of the visual components, images, texts and colours are then added to this basic layout. Once the web designer has created the basic layout, they can add extra elements to make it look more aesthetically appealing.
The visual design is the final result, which is then presented to the client for approval. Web designers can either use Photoshop or Dreamweaver to create the layout. Dreamweaver is considered the best program to use, due to its user friendly interface and professional tools. While Dreamweaver allows for advanced customization, it is also a slower process. Web designers will usually use Photoshop to create the actual visual design, although this is not completely necessary.
When dealing with online businesses, a visual description can sometimes be much more important than the textual content. Web designers can add graphics, videos and audio to make their website more appealing. Audio and video visuals can be complex processes and usually require technical skills to create. However, because most modern web designs are simple, even web designers who are not highly skilled can create these visuals.
Web designers are also responsible for the layout and aesthetics of the website. Layouts are extremely important because websites are used in a wide variety of ways. Web browsers have a default format, but many other formats are used as well. Web designers use different stylesheets and programs to create the layouts for each page and once complete, they send the layouts to the web designer. The web designer then works with the client to finalize the details, and then the website is live. Web designers may work with a number of different firms, depending on their expertise and the complexity of the task.
